SOUND SPOT: TIM TERRY

It's has been several months since I posted about a musical artist. Recently, my time has been limited, but at this moment my free time has improved greatly! Now, I am back in the saddle once again to bring you some artists you need to check for. I am starting things off with one of my favorite discoveries within the last few months. His name is Tim Terry a.k.a. The Tim Terry Experience.

This soul-singing crooner is representing Memphis, Tennessee and he has a very soulful and organic vibe to his music. Mr. Terry is determined to bring the purity and honesty of music back from the dead. He's definitely heading in the right direction. I've had his If you enjoy soulful ballads and mellow grooves Tim Terry is worth a listen. I've had his "Live & Unplugged" album in heavy rotation for some weeks now...

Are you ready to shake tailfeather? If so, you definitely need to checkout this mixx showcasing another one of my favorite soul music artists Peven Everett! This underrated Illinois native has been making quality music for years now, and I actually became a fan of his work back in 2003. I heard the classic track "Gabriel" he did with Roy Davis Jr. and I was all in. Peven has several worthy mellow to mid-tempo tracks in his musical archives, but fans mainly love the guy for his hypnotic dance and soulful house joints! His production just makes you want to move and his hooks are usually very catchy, which is the perfect musical marriage for my ears.

Today, I present you with a Peven Everett mixx full of many favorite dance and house tracks. This kat has endless remixes of his tracks and one mixx would not be enough, so this only part 1 of 2 mixxes. A lot of Peven's older joints were vinyl only releases, and many of them are now out of print. The quality on a few of the earlier vinyl joints is of a lesser quality, but neverless still dope! THE JON Bs BADD MIXX!
Time for another tribute mixx for one of my favorite R&B artist, and his name is Jon B. Putting it simply, the boy is BAD! Any true soul music lover is a fan of this guy, and if not they should be. His music is timeless. Jon has evolved as an artist over the years of his lengthy career, but he hasn't lost that signature musical flavor that his loyal fans cherish. That is what separates him from other vanilla soul crooners like Robin Thicke, Remy Shand, Mayer Hawthorne and Miles Bonny.

Earlier this year I saw Jon B perform live at a local venue, and he gave us a nice show! He sang all of his hits, which was great! The most amazing part of his set was that he handled all of the instrumentation and vocals by himself. No band or back-up singers anywhere, plus he ended his performance with a dope drum solo. There is nothing like the sound of live music. It's nice to see a music artist with real stage presence, so when Mr. B comes to your city make sure you support him. Jon's new album "Comfortable Swagg" is scheduled to drop in early November...

The 90's aren't considered the "Golden Era" just for hip-hop. It's also known for being the decade when the hottest remixes were created! A remix in 2011 is adding another rapper or singer on a song, or spitting a slightly different verse over the original beat. That's not a remix, and it's a pretty lazy approach if you ask me! A REAL remix is when the original song is totally reworked and transformed into something else like Optimus Prime. It needs a new beat (slower or faster than the original), different lyrics, reworked hooks and melodies to make it a legit remix.

Producers like Eddie F, All-Star, Puff Daddy, Teddy Riley, Jermaine Dupri, Chunky Thompson, Kenny Smoove, The Ummah, etc. did just that back in the good ole' days. This mixx is a tribute to that generation of producers. I through in a couple extended versions of tracks I hadn't heard in a while as well, so pull out your Cross Colour short sets and enjoy!

This year has been filled with a lot of great music releases from some of my favorite musical artists. I love being overwhelmed with quality music. I'm like a kid in a money store. One musical moment that stood out for me this summer was hearing Detroit native Charity Ward's first single "Sounds Like Love" on the local radio. I've seen her perform live three times and she's a great talent, so I'm very happy that her career is moving forward. Definitely check for Charity, and when her album finally drops get it. GROOVYISH UPTEMPO MIXX!
When it comes to my favorite female soul duos, first in line is Changing Faces, and right behind them is Zhane'. Their sound & style was unique and soulful, with some of catchiest hooks in the game. For that reason alone, I still miss these ladies and their music. Classics like "Groove Thang" and "Hey Mr. DJ" could still get the booties on the floor at the club in 2011! Those joints are timeless. I also love their collabo tracks with De La Soul, Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah. All you youngsters out there that don't about Zhane', get familiar. Start with their self-titled debut album, and you'll be glad you did. Now, lets get into some music. My latest mixx is actually one that I have kept in the archives for a minute. I listen to this one mainly when I am working out, cleaning, working, etc. I call it the "Groovyish Uptempo Mixx" because these grooves are uptempo for sure. Check it out when you get a chance.

ELZHI'S TRIBUTE 2 NASIR!
This is a REAL Detroit emcee! His name is Elzhi. You should know this kid. He used to be a member of the group Slum Village. He was basically kicked out of the group. That was a huge mistake in my personal opinion. It is 2011. Elzhi is back at with his latest mixtape release entitled "Elmatic" which is paying homage to Nas' classic "Illmatic" album from the early 90s. I have heard several Illmatic tribute mixtapes throughout the years from other rappers, but I must say that I feel this Elzhi joint is the best. You may think I am being biased because I rep Detroit, but I'm actually not (this time). El's tribute bests the others because he actual captures the flow and delivery of Nas during that time. He's not just spit verses over the best, but he embodies the essence of Nas and the Golden Era of Hip-Hop! Take a listen for yourselves...

MILES BONNY IN THE MIXX!
When most music fans think of vanilla soul artists, the first names that come to mind are the usual suspects like Jon B, Teena Marie, Robin Thicke, Mayer Hawthorne, Remy Shand, etc. Well, if you haven't already, add Mr. Miles Bonny to that elite list as well. He's a really dope singer, producer, DJ and trumpeter from Kansas City, if you didn't know! I have been following this gentleman's career for several years now, and he never fails to impress me with his diversity as an artist. Miles performs classics from the past, soul ballads, hip-hop and remixes. He's gifted enough to flow over the most complicated production, but never fails to keep it soulful. His new album "Lumberjack Soul" drops on June 24th, so mark your calendars. Miles Bonny is defnitely one of my favorite Indie artists doing it right now, and if you close your eyes you'd swear he was a brother from another!

I decided to finally make a mixx showcasing some of my favorite Miles tracks from the past and present. As a fan, I want to give this artist some well deserved exposure, so put ears on this joint expeditiously. It's long overdue, so I hope you enjoy!

RHIAN'S HAND ARE REALLY CLEAN!
Is it the end of April already? Now, that's a semi-vacation, but I am back at it. For how long is unsure. Anyway, today I reintroduce to you that beautiful Ghana native soul-singer Rhian Benson. Remember her?? She's not only a looker, but she sings great too! It's been six years since her debut album "Gold Coast" dropped, and it was sort of a letdown after her first single "Say How I Feel" blew up. The remix featuring Dwele and Slum Village was even better! In 2011 Rhian is back with a new and refreshed outlook, and it definitely shows in her new music. Her new joint "Hands Clean" has a more uptempo-electronic sound to it. The beats are catchy and her vocals are on point. Rhian describes her new sound as "Sade meets DJ Shadow" and she's right. Personally, I dig it!

I was shocked to hear about the death of Nate Dogg from The Dogg Pound. Even though he's left us physically, his music will continue to live on. After reading more about the Nate's death, it got me thinking about all of the others music has lost over the years. Ms. Aaliyah immediately came to my mind. I still hole in the music game since her departure. Many have tried to step into her shoes, but there will only be one Aaliyah. For that reason I felt the need to add a little of her flavor to my current mixx, so she's starting this one off. I call this joint "Everlastting Soule" and it's full of old, new and rarely heard soul remixes.

ANTHONY DAVID IS BACK AT IT!
Remember the soul singer Mr. Anthony David? His track "Smoke One" is still one of my favorite soul tracks ever. It's soulfulness is simplistic, but words hit home and the beat is hypnotic. Anthony's sound has a definite old school vibe like many of the past greats, and I really believe that's what will separate him from the rest of the pack. I recently heard him perform live on Tom Joyner's morning radio show, and I couldn't tell if it was live or Memorex. The first single "4evermore" featuring Algebra from his new album "As Above So Below" is creating a lot of buzz right now. The album hits the shelves on March 22nd, so be sure to mark your calendars. His remake of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is real nice too. A Nas verse on that joint would have taken it to another level. Maybe a remix in the near future...

Hip-Hop heads take note! The emcees and producers from the Low Budget Camp are back at it again. Kaimbr has teamed up with Mr. Kev Brown (producer extraodinare) to create the "Alexander Green" project. The dopest thing about this album outside of Kev's production is that he only uses Al Green samples. If you haven't heard, Al Green has some of dopest soul samples known to man. Even though Kev is not the first producer to flip a classic Al Green sample, he does put his own original and magical touch on these beats. Listening to this joint reminded me just how much I missed Kev Brown and the Low Budget Crew. This is what the game has been missing. This truly reminds me of back when I'd get hyped once I heard Gangstarr, Def Squad or Wu-Tang dropped new music. This is a Golden Era flashback joint...

Listening to Nikko's sultry vocals over Imani's smooth instrumentals is heaven in a hand basket. Nikko stated this about working on this project: “For me, this project created itself in a sense… Love as Art. Love creating itself. Through Art. Now, this joint here is on some serious mellow madness! Definitely a great listen during a relaxing afternoon when whinding down is critical. Musician Imani Waddy (whom I recently discovered) has an album "Love Letters To: Yellow" that has me smiling from ear-to-ear. It's always a treat when I discover new and talented artists in a time when many feel that real music is on the decline. This proves that great music is still available, but you have to put a little effort into finding it. Imani's Yellow has a jazzy-lounge sound, and should appeal the fans of instrumentals and smooth jazz. One of the seven tracks inlcudes guest vocals from soul singer Nikko Gray. The beatmaker AFTA-1 also adds a little of his flavor to one of these tracks as well.

Awhile back, I came across this soulful track by a soulful kat from Baltimore that calls himself J.S.O.U.L. and my interest was sparked. I love discovering new music artists. Unfortunately, I forgot to check for the dude when I originally planned, but eventually did it a few months later (so I thought). I Googled his name and another soul (gospel) singer using the same moniker popped up. The other kat was alright, but it wasn't the sound I was expecting judging by the track I'd previously heard. Luckily, I heard a remix track from the right JSOUL featuring Erro awhile later, and from that I figured out who was who. The timing was perfect because happened right around the release of his latest "Black Sinatra" music project. Don't sleep on this joint! There are 11 tracks with featured guests that include Eric Roberson, Natalie "The Floacist" Stewart, Substantial, Carol Riddick and Julie Dexter. Support independent soul music.

A VERY SOULFUL! PRODUCER!
The only thing I like better than beat instrumentals is free beat instrumentals. I like them even better when my dude Soulful! is creating them. What makes a producer unique to my ears is having a somewhat original sound. It could be a signature loop pattern, odd sample choices, bells, dogs barking or whatever. However, it can't be too repetitive because then the beats become boring and predictable. That's a definite no-no! Legendary producers like Pete Rock, Dre & DJ Premier have figured out this magical formula. You can hear their beats at anywhere and know they're behind the boards. Their signature sounds very recognizable to music lovers around the world. I believe that's the level where any up & coming producer in the game aspires to reach.

With that being said, beat lovers need to keep this kat Soulful! on their radars. Yeah, I know! Don't call it a comeback...I've been here for years. The break was great, but now it's time to fill up your music crate. I love dropping those almost verses from time to time, just to let you that have mediocre talent and that's why I blog instead of rap. Anyway, this post is not about me, it's actually about the soul singer Jaafar. I did a post about Jaafar back in 2009 when he dropped his sleeper first album "Travel Light" that went unheard by the masses. Now, he's back with his latest project called "Supernatural Love" and I am digging it! Jaafar is not recreating the soul wheel with this album, but he stays in his lane pretty well. I want to wish a Happy New Year to all of my family, friends, fans and supporters! The year 2010 was solid overall, but I want 2011 to be even better. I wanted to start the year off by paying homage to one of my favorite soul artists Musiq Soulchild. His unique musical stylings have kept me pretty entertained over the years. However, I feel that he's an overlooked and slept on artist even today. I still remember when I first saw Musiq perform live as an opening act for Erykah Badu prior to the release of his first album. At that time "Just Friends" was popping on the radio. Even as an unknown artist he ripped the stage, and the rest is history. NEXX IN HEAVY ROTATION!

I get asked frequently what I am currently listening to in my iPod, so I decided to do a post showcasing of the joints I currently have in rotation. Place your eyes on the albums covers below:

When I first came across this Nottz album "You Need This Music" I wasn't expecting much. Nothing against Nottz personally, but most rap music today stinks. However, after putting ears on this joint, it has grown on me like a rash. It's fully of solid rhymes and catchy production. Plus, featured guests include: Dwele, Bilal, Royce 5'9, Black Milk, Little Brother and Joel Ortiz!

Slakah The Beatchild is one of the hottest producers in the game, and his latest joint "Something Forever" showcases some of his best work to date! This is good stuff no matter how you slice it, so don't sleep!

If you are looking for some smooth grooves with an old school feel, you need to put ears on this new El DeBarge "Second Chance" album. I was surprised how good this joint sounded, but I may be biased because I am a serious DeBarge stan.

You may not know about the soul singer Iman Williams, but you need to! Her new album "Stupid Human Tricks" is definitely my kind of soul music. Sweet vocals and solid production.

The new R. Kelly album "Love Letter" is definitely his best in years! He's back to actually singing instead of thug rapping. Welcome back Kels...we missed you!

I have been supporting this kat for a minute now, and I get emails asking about this dude all of the time. I have slipped many of his hot beats into several of my past mixxes. REGGIE NOBLE VS. REDMAN!
All these hip-hop blogs on the Internet, and I am not seeing
enough about my dude Redman's new album! This kat is a veteran, so anytime he drops a new joint I'm all over it like diarrhea. Lyrically, Reggie hasn't lost step after all of his years in the game. The new album is simply titled "Reggie" and it's 13 tracks deep. Featured guests include: Saukrates (when this dude dropping a new album?), Method Man, Melanie Rutherford, Bun B, Faith Evans, DJ Kool and some others I have never heard of. I feel musical taste is personal, and that's why I don't do many album reviews. However, I must state my peace about this latest Redman album. Overall, the rhymes are on point, but I feel the production is lacking something. I miss the days when Erick Sermon handled all of the production duties. There are average producers, great producers, and then there are legendary producers. Pete Rock is a hip-hop legend by every definition. He is one of the reasons why I fell in love with hip-hop music. The classic records he's made with CL Smooth in the past could still rock a party in 2010! There are so many hot tracks by the duo that it's not worth trying to name them all. I know there are plenty of people out there that never really liked Pete Rock spitting lyrics on the microphone. It's been around as long as I can remember, so me and Mrs. Tones got a thang going on. Discussing and sharing music with this blog over the years has provided me the opportunity meet a few really cool and like minded individuals online. Two of those people are Fave and The Big La. These two music minded gentleman have joined forces with Mr. Fresh to create the group C3. Fave plays the keyboards, Fresh is on lead guitar and Big La is handling the drum programming. RAHEEM SOUL HIPPIE MIXX!
It’s time to drop another soul artist dedication mixx, and nexx up is Raheem DeVaughn. What I appreciate most about this artist outside of musical talent is his aggressive grind. The guy stays busy leaking free music and doing guest appearances with everyone. Personally, I appreciate it! Lyrically, Raheem touches on several topics like love, life, relationships and sex, but I enjoy his music the most when it’s socially conscious or politically motivated. There’s not enough of that in the music today, so I applaud artists that challenge the listeners. No matter what you think about the man or some of his past business decisions as an artist, you have to respect his hustle. For that reason I took some time out to put this mixx together I call the “Raheem Soul Hippie”mixx. THE SUNSHINE HAS RETURNED!
This has been a great year for female soul artists coming back on the scene after years of being absent. Monica, Faith Evans and now Sunshine Anderson. True R&B is back in 2010! About four months ago I heard Sunshine doing a radio interview, and she somewhat explained her absence. To sum it up, it basically came down to label issues (which is typical). She took her time away from music to focus on her personal life and family. Sunshine wasn't sure if she would ever release another album, so it was nice to see that her new joint had dropped. It came out of thin air with little to no promotion. It's called The Sun Shines Again and after listening to it, I can hear that she hasn't lost a step musically. CHRISETTE IS BRINGING "REIGN"!
One of my favorite voices is back with on the scene with some new music, and her name is Chrisette Michele. Not only does she have new music, but she has a new look as well. If you look closely, you'll notice Ms. Michele has cut all of her hair off, and is currently kicking a natural style. She considers this transformation a rebirth of being healthy, and it starts at the top of her head. Nina Simone is one of Chrisette's greatest influences, and you can definitely tell by her overall style. Nina was a trendsetter back in the day, and I believe Chrisette is becoming just that in 2010. Chrisette's new album Let Freedom Reign hits store shelves on November 30, 2010. The first single from the project "I'm A Star" has been creating a buzz over the last few weeks. Guess who's back! Slakah The Beatchild straight out of Toronto. He's the Indie producer/singer that we've all come to know and love. Slakah's beat making is impeccable! It's hip-hop, soul, smooth, catchy and straight dope, just the way I like it. Check for his debut album "Soul Movement, Vol. 1" if you missed it to hear what I mean. Then when you finish with that one, put ears on his new joint "Something Forever" which is a 7-track EP. SOUND SPOT: J. TAIT
Are you ready for some more soulful talent from the new Motown era? Of course you are! Nexx up is Mister J. Tait who just happens to be a song writer, music producer and a dope singer. I call that a triple threat. I had the privilege of seeing this young man perform live during an unplanned performance at the recent Eric Roberson concert intermission. The host of the show spotted him in the audidence and called him on stage. J. Tait did his thing! He kicked a nice acapella that had the crowd vibing. At that time I didn't know that Mr. Tait's "Things On My Mind" EP Part. 1 was on the streets. Once I put ears on it, I quickly realized that he is a great singer. He's has an old school feel with a new school twist. His EP has a retro soulfulness to it. If you enjoy soul singers like Jaheim, Calvin Richardson and Urban Mystic, Dave Hollister, Sam Cooke, J. Tait should be on your radar.

KANYE'S VERY LONG RUNAWAY!

Kanye West is one of those artists that people love to hate. Even when you are a fan of his music, he seems to do something that makes you say "what the hell was he thinking?" Actually, that is part of his appeal. You never know what to expect from that kid. I'll be the first to say that his last album was a creative disaster that I am glad to forget. I gave him a pass though because his mother had just died around that time.

Recently, Mr. West has been on the grind releasing one hot track after another for his fans. The dude is back and focused, which is obvious by the quality level of his leaked tracks. Now, he's released a 30+ minute music video "Runaway" showcasing some of his new music. It's no Michael Jackson epic, but it's definitely interesting and creative. I'm sure there is more meaning behind the visuals and madness then I got from my one viewing, but that's cool with me. Now, it's your turn to peep the new extended video (if you haven't already)...

As I continue on with my soul artist dedications, Erro is up nexx! I have been following Eric Roberson's (a.k.a. Erro) career since the beginning, and this soul singer has not lost a step throughout the years. I have made it my business to turn as many soul music lovers onto Erro as possible because he's a deserving talent. All of Eric’s albums are great in their own way, but it wasn’t until I saw him perform live at an intimate venue that my “fanship” heightened. He sounded exactly the same live as he did on his CDs. That was very impressive. Erro’s music remains timeless, so I decided to create a musical collage showcasing some of his guest appearances and rare tracks, which are several of my favorites from his body of work. BLACK THOUGHT/J. PERIOD MIXTAPE!When it comes to top-notch veteran emcees, Black Thought is definitely one of the most underrated greats! I don't this guy knows how to spit a wack verse. If one does exist, I haven't heard it. The Roots are legendary as a band, but this lyricist is who gives them credibility in hip-hop. Fans like myself are still waiting on that official Black Thought solo album, but in the mean time and in between time we've been blessed with a dope mixtape.

J. Period put together a live mixtape showcasing Black Thought doing what he does best. It's called "The J. Period Live Mixtape (Illadelphia Edition)" featuring a bunch of tracks recorded live at The Manifesto (a Toronto hip-hop festival) back on September 26, 2010. If you've ever seen or heard The Roots live, you know what to expect. Real emcees like Black thrive on stage. This joint is a must have for true hip-hop fans, so grab it immediately!

NU MARSHA AMBROSIUS IN 2011!
I was one of the many saddened fans that heard the bad news about Floetry breaking up. I didn't really know what to expect from those two ladies as solo artists. Could they actually do it alone? Well, Marsha Ambrosius took the microphone by the cord and ran with it! She dropped a couple of mixtapes soon after the divorce to showcase her solo abilities. The first mixtape joint was mediocre (IMO), but the second one was dope! My confidence in Marsha was restored. Natalie Stewart a.k.a. The Floacist seems to be still trying to find her lane as a solo artist. However, I do like her new track featuring Musiq Soulchild, so we shall see. In the meantime, everything is looking up for Marsha. She turned her once chunky-monkey frame into a slim goody! For that reason her score for sex appeal has gone up a several points. She pulled a Jennifer Hudson for real.

Marsha's new album "Late Night & Early Mornings" was supposed to drop this Fall, but now it has been pushed back to January 4, 2011. Let's hope nothing side tracks that from happening...

FREE THE HARD WAY!
Do you remember the first female host Free from the original BET show 106 & Park? Some of my women visitors might not remember her, but I am sure the fellas do. What man could forget a sexy lady like that? She was really the only reason why I watched that show, and once she departed I stopped. Free left the show abruptly, and never really explained why she made that decision. Rumors had spread that she'd left to pursue her own music career as a rapper. I was one of the fortunate people to hear some of her early tracks that had leaked onto the Internet. Personally, I thought they were decent, but they seemed a little ruff around the edges. The foundation seemed solid, but they needed more work. Needless to say, her album never came out. Then she vanished from the scene. I thought we'd never see her again.

Recently, she popped up on the 106 & Park 10th Anniversary special that aired on BET last week. During the show Free mentioned that she had just dropped a new EP of music. V. PEA'S GOTTA HAVE IT!
Hip-hop music can be original, predictable, boring, dope, moving, interesting, satisfying and annoying, which is still why I love it! I have been a fan since its early beginnings, and I still support artists that keep me interested. One of my favorites since I first heard him spit many years ago is my dude Von Pea (Tanya Morgan member). His rhymes always seem effortless, but they're interesting. One minute he might be making a joke about life, and the next he's dropping some real ish (while keeping it fun)! It's a nice balance, and he never takes himself too serious, which works well for this emcee. Von has released a couple of solo mixtape/albums, and on October 12th he'll be dropping his latest musical endeavor called "Gotta Have It" for the fans. I gotta have it (pun intended)!

Mr. Will Downing is a respected and cherished voice in R&B, soul and jazz music. A few years back Will had some medical issues that many of us thought would end his singing career, but he recovered stronger than ever.
Now, he's back with his 15th album release called "Lust, Love & Lies" for his fans. This album is unique because it plays like a novel, with 20 tracks full of songs and skits discussing lust, love and lies. It's basically a tale about modern love and relationships. Each song is a leadway into the next portion of the story. The music can stand on their own even without the albums' theme, but they work beautifully together. It's a very interesting listen on a lazy afternoon. All lovers of that sophisticated soul music needs to put ears on this one for sure!

ERIC ROBERSON LIVE IN DETROIT!

I videotaped this clip of Eric Roberson doing one of his many made up songs during a live performance at the Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit. I titled it the "Astrology Song" due to the subject matter. These are the types of moments that reveals the silly side of Erro, which makes his shows so entertaining. SOUND SPOT: NADINE CHARLES
I recently rediscovered an independent soul artist from London that I had forgotten about, and her name is Nadine Charles. She's worked with Raphael Saadiq, and provided vocals for electronica-soul groups Silhouette Brown and 2000Black. Don't know those groups? Look them up! Modeling is another passion of hers, so checkout some of her photos online. I sent a newer track of hers entitled "Kisses In The Morning" and it is a lovely track! For that reason I showcased it on my latest soul mixx, so keep your ears open for that one. COULTRAIN IS SEYMOUR LIBERTY!
Mr. Coultrain is an Indie soul music artist that has been working pretty hard over the last few years trying to make a name for himself. If you purchased, stole or listened to the Platnium Pied Pipers (PPP) last album (Abundance)which you should have if you like good music) then you've already been introduced to Coultrain. He provides the vocals on several of the PPP laced tracks, which made that album a success in my personal opinion. He has very soulful voice that reminds me of the good ole' days of soul music from the 70's and 80's. I was hoping we'd get some more tunes from this dude sooner or later, and my prayers were answered.

Coultrain recently release an EP "GodMustBeABoogieMan" for his fans. There are 13 songs on the joint broken into a musical story format of three chapters: APrince'sDeparture, ARoofTopXperience and ACharlatan'sReturn. Most of the production duties are being handled by Patrice Rushen and Yesterday's New Quintet. It's fresh music worth you taking a listen. Soul music lovers take notice!

ESPERENZA'S CHAMBER MUSIC!
I consider myself a fan of all types of jazz, but there are only a few artists from today's list that I stop what I am doing to pay attention. The female jazz musicians that tops my list is definitely Esperanza Spalding! She's dope in so many ways that I won't bother trying to explain them all. Her stage presence is overwhelming and her skills on the bass are effortless. Esperanza's voice just brings everything together with a strong, but smooth quality that I consider hypnotic. Watching her live is amazing! I remember channel surfing one late Saturday night last year, and I was lucky enough to catch a live performance of hers in Central Park (located in Manhattan, NY). That was one of the best live musical performances I've watched on television.

Anyway, Esperanza is about to release her third album "Chamber Music Society" on August 17, 2010. The new album is a mixture funk, soul, acoustic, classical and jazz. Even if you just think you like jazz, I would suggest you take a listen some of Esperanza's music. You just might like it.

They are rapping, but don't expect anything like Mos Def or Black Thought type of lyrical prowness though. Thing more Beastie Boys meets Weird Al Yankovic!

BILAL'S REVENGE IS AIRTIGHT!
Soul Brother #2 (James Brown is Soul Brother #1) is about to drop another album on September 14th. His name is Bilal, and when he releases new music you can expect it to be tight. Airtight in fact! His last album was leaked and bootlegged so much that it was never officially released. Fans ravaged that unmastered and incomplete musical treasure all over th Internet. When fans are deprived that is what happens. I expect the same thing will happen if and when D'Angelo finally decides to release some new material. True music lovers are like drug addicts, and when they get wind of some new goodies, nothing will stop them. They'll beg, plead, pay outrageous prices, borrow, fight, sometimes steal to get that music. Fortunately, Bilal fans will not have to do any of that. We only have a few weeks to go before "Airtight's Revenge" hits the streets, so mark your calendars.

RAS KASS: A.D.I.D.A.S.!
One of California's finest emcees is back on the scene once again. Ras Kass is his name, and real rhyming is his claim to fame. Most fans wonder if their favorite emcees of yester-year still have the gift-of-gab on the microphone after a long absence. Truthfully, most of them don't have it anymore, and they usually sound pretty dated. Not Ras Kass though. He still brings the fury on the mic like it was 1995! I think that time in prison made the dude hungry again, and it shows on his latest album "A.D.I.D.A.S." featuring DJ Rhettmatic. The double album has a total of 26 tracks on it. What I like most about this joint is the numerous amount of dope emcees guest featured. Ras had to lift up some rocks to find some of these rappers from Christmas' past. Checkout this line-up: Chino XL, Planet Asia, Xzibit, Kurupt, Canibus, Jean Grae, Phil Da Agony, David Banner, Royce 5'9, Ice T and many others. Nice!

OPEN HOUSE GROOVS MIXX!All house music lovers unite! I am a huge fan of soulful house music; however, I don't make many mixxes showcasing that genre. I get at least 3 emails a month asking when I plan on dropping another house mixx. Truthfully, it is difficult for me to find the kind of house that I like these days. I prefer the older deep house stylings of kats like DJ Spinna, Men At Work, Roy Davis Jr., etc. A lot of the newer stuff sounds more like techno music, which is alright, but it's not my preference. Fortunately, I was able to pull together a group of select tracks from the past, present and near future that definitely developed into a hot compilation!

I call this joint the "OpenHouseGroovs" mixx, because I want the listeners to remain open minded while this one is playing. Open yourself up and ingest these groovy house vibes. Rock in your chair. Get up and dance. Pump your fists. Get your house on!

EXILE: AM/FM BONUS TRACKS!
Remember, the underground producer,DJ and rapper Exile from California? How about the group Emanon where Exile was the DJ for rapper/singer Aloe Blacc? This is the kat that dropped the dope album "Dirty Science" back in 2006! If none of that is ringing any bells, then you probably don't know Exile, so here is your chance to get familiar. He's worked with artists like Ghostface Killa, Blu, Mobb Deep, Jurassic 5 and many others. Exile's production style can't really be discribed in one or two words. His music strips your listening abilities down and mangles your previous comprehension of what beats should sound like. It's the type of musical journey you would expect from producers like El-p and Flying Lotus. That's definitely a complement coming from me. It may sound like noise at first to new listeners, but just keep listening and you may find the dopeness you seek!

CONYA DOSS: TRANSITION BLU!The soulstress Conya Doss is about to release her 5th album "Blu Transition" in September, and being a fan of hers from the start I am happy about this news. Conya is a talented singer and she's definitely easy on the eyes, but what I dig most about this woman is her great personality! She is always humble, polite and charming in person, which isn't always the case with many of today's artists.

SOUND SPOT: GENO YOUNG
Here is another independent soul artist from Dallas, Texas worth checking for, and his name is Geno Young. He started his musical journey working as a musical director, arranger and producer for lovely Erykah Badu. The knowledge and experience that he gained from touring with Erykah gave him enough courage to step out on his own as a soul artist. Geno released his debut album "The Ghetto Symphony" in early 2004. I first became aware of Mr. Young after my homegirl HoneySoul let me hear the dope "Honeydew" single from his album. That track never gets old! Another nice track worth mentioning from that album is called "Broadway" and I thing George Benson would be proud if he heard it. The whole album was solid, but as usual it went under the soul radar for most music lovers.

Fortunately, Geno is back after 6 years with his second album entitled "Ear Hustler" and I like this album even better than the first. This joint seems more focused. I noticed some growth in the production and lyrical content as well. With the right push, this album could put Geno Young on the "soul map" for lovers of the genre. Currently, the new album is only available for purchase digitally through the CDBaby.com web-site. You can listen to snippets of each song of the album on that site as well.

PHONTIGALLO PHAVORITES 2!
It's been a minute since I dropped a Phonte Coleman dedicated mixx for the fans. I believe it was 2007 when the original Phontigallo Phavorites joint hit the e-streets. I originally put it together to showcase some of my "phavorite" underground and collaborative featuring the man himself. Being a fan, I wanted everyone to pay attention this up and coming talent. A lot of things have changed for Phonte since 2007. He's become a household name in hip-hop music, been nominated for a Grammy with Foreign Exchange, ended his run with Little Brother, Twitter checked 9th Wonder, and established himself as a respected soul singer. It just shows that true talent can't be denied. I hope Little Brother reunites in the future, but until then rumor has it that Phonte is working in his solo album. The fans are anciously waiting for that to drop. Hurry that $#%! up Phonte!

IS SLUM VILLAGE IN THE SLUMS?
Slum Village is a rap group that has managed to survive just about every tragedy known to music throughout the years. Most other groups would have called it quits by now. The first major blow was when Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla left the group. With the man behind their sound gone, I wondered if Slum could still deliver the same quality, then they recruited Elzhi. His addition made the group better lyrically. Soon after the member Baatin left the group, leaving Elzhi and T3 to maintain on their own. Still the SV movement remained alive. Eventually, fans got word that J Dilla was rejoining the group for a reunion album, and Baatin would be coming back as well. Unfortunately, J Dilla died before that could happen. That was big blow to group and the music industry. However, there was finally some good news for fans after Baatin finally rejoined the group. The trio was back in the studio making music once again, and then Baatin died abruptly. It was another major blow to the group! T3 and Elzhi continued to push on with the making of their new album "Villa Manifesto" which drops on July 27th.

Recently, news has been buzzing around the Internet that Elzhi is no longer with the group? Elzhi stated that their label has basically removed him from SV, and he seems to be unsure why? As a fan I am dissappointed that this has happened. Without Elzhi being a member, what is the point of continuing the Slum Village movement. T3 is a decent rapper, but he's now a solo artist, not a group. This issue may finally put Slum Village in the grave for good!

The man with the smooth vocals and jazzy vibe is finally back! Yes, my main man Kem is back on the scene after being absent for over 5 years. When most artists leave the game for that long, you begin to wonder if they will ever return... *cough* D'Angelo & Lauryn Hill *cough*! His first single "Why Would You Stay?" from his upcoming third album Intimacy: Album III is getting much airplay around these parts. It's a beautiful ballad that might make the ladies and sensative dudes cry? The new album drops on August 10th, so put an alarm reminder in your cell phone. Kem's first two albums were classics in my opinion, and I don't expect anything less from his third joint.
